Installing an extender is a fairly painless process. When you buy a Media Center Extender you receive an extra CD which contains additional software which allows you to manage and have MCX devices connect to your system. This takes just a few minutes to install.

After the software has installed you are asked to enter the Setup Key supplied when you turn on your extender device. What this does is authorise that extender to then connect in future to your Media Center 'Hub' without authentication. The device then appears in the Media Center Extender Manager. From here on very little user interaction is required.
The user is then asked if they wish to allow the Extender to access all 'My Documents' folders on the system. Click here for more information on why this is nessisary.
If any changes need to be made to the permissions, this will take place now. The time required will vary dramatically if the My Documents folder contains a great number of files.
Once this is complete you will then be asked if you wish to enable sending reports back to Microsoft should you encounter an error in the application.
Now that setup has been completed the authorised extender should be free to connect to the Media Center PC Host.
