Once installed the presence of a Media Center Extender is pretty much transparent
on the host machine provided it meets the requirements for the number of extenders
installed.
| Number of Extenders | Media Center CPU Requirement | Media Center Memory Requirement |
| 1 | 2.8GHz | 256MB |
| 2 | 2.8GHz | 512MB |
| 3-5 | 3.4GHz | 1024MB |
What you do get on the host machine are 3 new tools ('Media Center Extender Manager', 'Extender Resource Monitor' and 'Media Center Extender Network Performance Tuner') which take you through the steps of installing, managing devices, alerting the user to performance issues and configuring your network for best performance. Along with these tools, help information for the Media Center Extender and Xbox Extender is also installed.
The Extender creates a new user account for itself during installation which is used when the device connects to the host. What this means is things like the Media Library are not shared and must be rebuilt for the devices when you connect for the first time. Because it is connecting as seperate user, this is the reason why you must change the permission during setup to 'Make all My Documents folders' open to the extender user. Otherwise you would not be able to access any of the content stored there.
